Pawing, whining and nudging for attention
All behaviour guides
Why it happens
Somewhere along the way, pawing or whining produced attention, even annoyed attention counts. The dog repeats what pays.
What works
- Decide as a household what earns attention: calm sitting or lying nearby does, pawing does not.
- When the pawing starts, go neutral: no eye contact, no talking, turn slightly away. Pay the very first calm pause instead.
- Pre-empt it: scheduled attention, sniff walks, chew sessions and training bursts drain the need before it demands.
- Teach a polite ask: sitting quietly in front of you becomes the magic button that works.
What makes it worse
- Do not push the dog off while talking to it, being pushed and spoken to IS attention.
- Do not ignore real needs, a dog asking at the door or at the empty water bowl is communicating, not manipulating.
Keep this in mind
This behaviour fades fast once the maths flips, calm pays, pushy does not. Consistency from every family member is the whole trick.
