Barking at the doorbell

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

The bell reliably predicts an exciting or alarming event. Barking is the announcement.

What works

  1. Recondition: play a recorded bell quietly, treat, repeat until the bell predicts cheese, not chaos.
  2. Teach Go to bed as the doorbell routine and pay it richly.
  3. Thank and interrupt: a calm Thanks, I got it plus a treat scatter works for many watchdog types.

What makes it worse

  • Do not shout, the dog hears backup barking.
  • Do not let visitors greet a barking dog, calm earns the greeting.

Keep this in mind

Alert barking is deep in the dog operating system. The goal is a short announcement, not silence.

What owners usually need for this

  • Doorbell sound recording
  • Dog bed or mat

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.
