Crying in the crate

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

The crate is new and confinement is unnatural until it is trained as a den.

What works

  1. Rewind to open-door crate games, meals inside, zero pressure.
  2. Grow closed-door time in seconds, treat through the bars for silence.
  3. Exercise and toilet before crate time, an empty and tired puppy settles.

What makes it worse

  • Do not open the door mid-crying, that makes crying the door handle. Wait for a 2-second pause, then open.
  • Do not use the crate for punishment or for hours beyond age-appropriate limits.

Keep this in mind

Crate protests are near universal in week 1. Trained gradually, most dogs later walk in on their own.

What owners usually need for this

  • Crate
  • Crate cover
  • Food puzzle

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.
