What works

Scan ahead yourself and steer around known hot spots.
For committed vacuum cleaners, a comfortable basket muzzle on risky routes is a safety tool.

What makes it worse

Do not finger-sweep the mouth for everything, save it for real dangers, it teaches swallow faster.
Do not punish after swallowing, the eating already paid.

Keep this in mind

Scavenging is normal dog economics, not bad character. Poison-bait awareness is the real reason to train this seriously.
