Why it happens
Evening zoomies and restlessness in adult dogs usually mean the day was either under-stimulating or over-stimulating. Both end in a dog that cannot switch off.
What works
- Audit the day: enough sniffing, chewing and brain work, not just steps. Mental work settles dogs better than mileage.
- Build a wind-down ritual at the same hour: last garden visit, then a long-lasting chew on the dog's bed, lights lower, voices calmer.
- Train Settle on cue during calm daytime moments, then use it in the evening.
- A stuffed, frozen food toy 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime is a legal off switch, licking and chewing lower arousal.
What makes it worse
- Do not answer evening restlessness with a hyped play session, it buys 10 minutes and pays back double arousal.
- Do not confine an unexercised dog and expect silence, meet the needs first.
