Fear of fireworks and storms

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

Sudden loud noise with no source visible is legitimately scary. Noise sensitivity is partly genetic.

What works

  1. Prepare a den: an inner room, blinds down, white noise or music, favourite bed.
  2. Comfort your dog freely, you cannot reinforce fear by being kind, that myth is dead.
  3. Off season, play firework sounds at whisper volume paired with treats, raise volume over weeks.
  4. For severe panic, ask the vet about event medication well before New Year.

What makes it worse

  • Never take a noise-fearful dog to a fireworks display to get used to it, flooding backfires.
  • Do not leave the dog alone on the worst nights if avoidable.

Keep this in mind

Around New Year every vet in Slovenia fields these calls. Preparation from November makes December manageable.

What owners usually need for this

  • White noise machine
  • Covered dog bed

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.

When to get help in person

This one is safety-critical or emotion-driven. Work with a qualified force-free trainer or a veterinary behaviourist rather than doing it alone. See a veterinarian for any sudden behaviour change or sign of pain, and a qualified behaviourist in person if your dog has bitten, guards with snapping, or panics when left alone. Read our approach.

Train it, do not just read about it

Pawty also has 99 training skills in 3-minute sessions you rate 1 to 5 paws, streaks that freeze instead of reset, and a care calendar. Free. No subscription, no paywall.
