Home alone struggles

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

Dogs are social animals, being alone is a learned skill, not a factory setting.

What works

  1. Train absences in tiny doses: 30 seconds out the door, return calmly, grow slowly.
  2. Leave a long-lasting chew, departures should predict good things.
  3. Keep exits and arrivals boring, no dramatic goodbyes.
  4. Film the dog when out, the video tells you the real state.

What makes it worse

  • Do not jump from 1 minute to 4 hours, panic is not stubbornness.
  • Do not punish destruction found later, it deepens the anxiety.

Keep this in mind

Mild alone-time trouble is common and trainable. True separation anxiety exists too, if the video shows panic, a certified trainer or vet behaviourist is the right call, and asking for help is good ownership.

What owners usually need for this

  • Long-lasting chew
  • Pet camera

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.

When to get help in person

This one is safety-critical or emotion-driven. Work with a qualified force-free trainer or a veterinary behaviourist rather than doing it alone. See a veterinarian for any sudden behaviour change or sign of pain, and a qualified behaviourist in person if your dog has bitten, guards with snapping, or panics when left alone. Read our approach.

Train it, do not just read about it

Pawty also has 99 training skills in 3-minute sessions you rate 1 to 5 paws, streaks that freeze instead of reset, and a care calendar. Free. No subscription, no paywall.
