Humping

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

Mostly over-arousal and stress relief, not dominance and often not sexual. Cushions, legs and dog friends are all targets.

What works

  1. Interrupt calmly and redirect to a chew or a known cue like Place.
  2. Spot the pattern: it usually spikes when excitement peaks, add calm breaks earlier.
  3. If it targets one specific dog friend, give both more structured breaks in play.

What makes it worse

  • Do not laugh and film it every time, attention feeds it.
  • Do not punish harshly, the underlying arousal needs an outlet, not a lid.

Keep this in mind

Embarrassing for owners, meaningless for dogs. Every dog owner has a humping story, ask any of them.
