Pulling on the leash

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

Dogs walk faster than us and pulling has worked, it moved them forward. Simple learned economics.

What works

  1. Stop dead when the leash tightens, walk on when it slackens. Every time.
  2. Pay heavily at your leg, make your side the best place on the street.
  3. Use a front-clip harness while retraining, it reduces pull power without pain.

What makes it worse

  • No leash jerks and no choke or prong collars, pain creates new problems.
  • Avoid retractable leashes during training, they teach that pulling extends the range.

Keep this in mind

Loose-leash walking is one of the slowest skills for every owner. Weeks of stop-and-go is completely normal.

What owners usually need for this

  • Front-clip harness
  • Standard 2 m lead
  • Treat pouch

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.

When to get help in person

Pawty is educational content, not veterinary or behavioural advice. See a veterinarian for any sudden behaviour change or sign of pain, and a qualified behaviourist in person if your dog has bitten, guards with snapping, or panics when left alone. Read our approach.

Train it, do not just read about it

Pawty also has 99 training skills in 3-minute sessions you rate 1 to 5 paws, streaks that freeze instead of reset, and a care calendar. Free. No subscription, no paywall.
