Not coming when called

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

The environment pays better than you: smells, dogs, freedom. Recall failed because the deal was bad, not because the dog is defiant.

What works

  1. Rebuild on a long line with top-tier pay: chicken, cheese, sausage.
  2. Never call for endings only: call, treat, release back to play, repeat 5 to 1 in favour of releases.
  3. Protect the cue: if you cannot enforce it, do not say it, go collect the dog instead.

What makes it worse

  • Do not punish a dog that finally came, you punish the arrival.
  • Do not chant the cue at a dog mid-sniff, every ignored repeat weakens the word.

Keep this in mind

Recall famously collapses in adolescence, around 6 to 18 months, and then rebuilds. It is a phase with a name, not a broken dog.

What owners usually need for this

  • Long line
  • High-value treats

All of these are in the Pawty Marketplace, filtered to retailers that deliver to your country.

When to get help in person

Pawty is educational content, not veterinary or behavioural advice. See a veterinarian for any sudden behaviour change or sign of pain, and a qualified behaviourist in person if your dog has bitten, guards with snapping, or panics when left alone. Read our approach.

Train it, do not just read about it

Pawty also has 99 training skills in 3-minute sessions you rate 1 to 5 paws, streaks that freeze instead of reset, and a care calendar. Free. No subscription, no paywall.
