Resource guarding (early signs)

All behaviour guides

Why it happens

Freezing, hard stare or a growl over food or toys means: I am worried you will take this. It is fear of loss.

What works

  1. Become the giver: walk past the bowl and drop a bonus treat, your approach starts predicting gains.
  2. Trade up, never confiscate, swap the guarded item for something better, then often give it back.
  3. With growling over many items or any snap, book a qualified force-free trainer early.

What makes it worse

  • Never take the bowl away to show who is boss, that manufactures serious guarding.
  • Do not punish growling, a growl is information. Silencing it leaves only the bite.

Keep this in mind

Mild guarding is common and responds very well to early, calm work. Acting now is exactly right.

When to get help in person

This one is safety-critical or emotion-driven. Work with a qualified force-free trainer or a veterinary behaviourist rather than doing it alone. See a veterinarian for any sudden behaviour change or sign of pain, and a qualified behaviourist in person if your dog has bitten, guards with snapping, or panics when left alone. Read our approach.
